At the Hiller Aviation Institute and Museum history is always in the making.
Sixty years ago, the XH-44 “Hiller-copter”, invented by Stanley Hiller, Jr., became the first helicopter built and flown west of the Mississippi River. It was also the first to employ two counter rotating all metal rotors. This design eliminated the need for a directional control tail rotor. The XH-44 was adapted for both land and water landings. Nearly 3,000 helicopters of many different designs were built at the Hiller aircraft plant in Palo Alto.
The XH-44 eight-year visit to the Hiller Aviation Museum, its Bay Area birthplace is over. The National Air and Space Museum will be displaying the historically significant XH-44 once again in a place of national honor at their new Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at John Foster Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C.
Using Autodesk Inventor® software, a group of dedicated museum volunteers have reverse-engineered and started building a second XH-44 helicopter. This replica aircraft will become the focus for the new “Helicopter History Exhibit “at the Hiller Aviation Institute and Museum.
Making a replica and displaying it effectively is a costly - yet needed undertaking.
Stan Hiller will turn 80 years old on November 15th of this year. Please help us honor and celebrate his achievements by joining TEAM 44 and becoming a part of this wonderful project.
