Aviation Camp Coordinator – Seasonal Full Time (May-August)

Overview

Lead the Bay Area’s most dynamic aerospace enrichment program for children at the Hiller Aviation Museum!

Aviation Camp is hands-on experience in science and engineering for kids ages 5-12.  Seven different week-long topics are available during the summer months providing age-appropriate adventures in flight.  Activities include experiments in aerodynamics, engineering challenges, model aircraft construction, exploration of real aircraft, flight simulation labs and more.

Each week up to 150 children participate in Aviation Camp, supported by up to 25 staff members and volunteers.  The Aviation Camp Coordinator leads their efforts, with responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Assign and schedule lessons among camp staff
  • Create assignments for volunteers and assistants
  • Lead meetings with instructors and assistants daily
  • Schedule staff break times
  • Address parent and staff concerns
  • Communicate camp status and issues to senior staff daily
  • Supervise teen volunteers assigned by the Volunteer Coordinator
  • Facilitate camp check-in and check-out
  • Train/mentor staff and volunteers as required
  • Conduct instructor observations and provide feedback
  • Assist with camp rotations to maintain camp schedule.

The Camp Coordinator position pays $18.50 – $20/hr, depending on experience.

Requirements

Teaching – Camp Coordinator applicants must have at least two years of experience teaching elementary or middle-school children.  Strong classroom management skills are essential. Familiarity with aviation is not required, but applicants must have experience teaching science and/or engineering concepts to children.

Leadership – Applicants must have at least one year in a leadership role directing the work of other staff members or volunteers.  The ideal candidate will have experience with training and scheduling staff in an educational setting.  Experience working directly with parents in fee-based programming is highly desirable.

Availability – Aviation Camp runs June 7 – August 27.  The Camp Coordinator works limited part-time hours on a flexible schedule during May to prepare for the training event June 3-5.  Typical shift times are 8 AM – 4:30 PM Monday through Friday.  Applicants must be available for training and for at least 10 weeks of camp.
