Hands-On Programs, 2007-2008
Exciting new programs provide hands-on experiences and inquiry-based learning opportunities. Programs require an extra lab fee in addition to museum admission. See individual program listings, below, for details.

During Summer Schedule (June 16th-August 29th), hands-on program availability is limited to Amazing Aircraft. Amazing Aircraft may be scheduled after 1 PM Monday through Friday. Morning and Saturday programs are not available during Summer Schedule.

Skyways
Grades 5-8
Duration: 2 Hours (includes Gallery Tour)
Program Fee: $2.00 per Participant

Developed in partnership with NASA, Skyways provides students with challenging real-world aviation situations that refine math skills and problem solving ability. Students use NASA-developed software to complete an Air Traffic Control simulation in which they guide aircraft safely and efficiently through crowded airspace. They also take on the role of pilot as they use real aviation charts to plan a cross country flight using math skills to calculate fuel usage and other flight safety parameters.

This activity builds on NASA's "Line Up With Math" program, a set of free classroom materials that engage students in proportional reasoning in the context of Air Traffic Control. As pre-visit preparation, visit www.smartskies.nasa.gov/lineup and select Problem Set A. Materials found there will introduce students to ATC vocabulary and concepts.

Forces of Flight
Grades 4-8
Duration: 2 Hours (includes Gallery Tour)
Program Fee: $2.00 per Participant
AVAILABLE JANUARY 2008

Developed in partnership with NASA, Forces of Flight immerses students in the world of aeronautical design and testing. Students are introduced to the four forces of flight and are broken into groups to conduct detailed experiments on two or more forces. Students predict, test and measure changes in lift, thrust and drag as they manipulate test equipment. Results are shared as students discover how airplanes react to the forces of flight.

This inquiry-based program is designed to accompany and enhance classroom-based pre- and post-visit design challenge activities in which students build one or more flying machines with an eye to the four forces. Additional information is available at http://www.hiller.org/teachers-resource.shtml.

Eye on the Sky
Grades K-6
Duration: 1.5 Hours (includes Gallery Tour)
Program Fee: $1.50 per Participant

Investigate aviation weather with a hands-on exploration of common meteorological phenomena. Grades K-3 will build puffy models of stratus, cirrus and cumulus clouds while learning the water cycle's role in cloud formation. Grades 4-6 will become storm chasers and learn the secrets of thunderstorms and tornadoes.

Wild Flight
Grades 1-7
Duration: 1.5 Hours (includes Gallery Tour)
Program Fee: $1.50 per Participant

Explore the inspiration for early aircraft design as your students take wing with the birds! Grades 1-3 and learn how the wings, bills and feet of different bird species are adapted to help them survive life in the air. Grades 4-7 take flight with an amazing airborne predator as they investigate ecosystems with owl pellets.

Amazing Aircraft
Grades K-5
Duration: 1.5 Hours (includes Gallery Tour)
Program Fee: $1.50 per Participant

Follow in the footsteps of early aviation pioneers by building and flying a small model glider or helicopter (please indicate preference when program is scheduled). Glider students will learn the parts of an airplane and (Grades 3-5) how an airplane is controlled in flight, while helicopter groups will investigate rotary-winged flight with paper copters and hand-launched helicopters.
