A graduate of UC Berkeley and the University of Houston\, Walheim began his career as an Air Force flight test engineer before being selected as a NASA astronaut in 1996. Over the next two decades\, he became one of the program’s most experienced mission specialists and spacewalkers. \nWalheim flew on three Space Shuttle missions\, including STS-135 in 2011 — the final flight of the Space Shuttle Program. He spent 36 days in space and completed five spacewalks totaling more than 36 hours\, helping build and outfit the International Space Station. At NASA\, he also served as CAPCOM\, led the Spacewalking Branch\, helped develop early ISS operations procedures\, and later guided safety and mission assurance for human spaceflight programs. \nAfter retiring from NASA\, Walheim continued shaping the future of space exploration\, serving in senior leadership roles at Axiom Space and later Blue Origin\, where he now works on astronaut crew integration. His career reflects a lifetime devoted to science\, aviation\, and inspiring the next generation. \n \n \n \n \n \n Don’t miss this must-attend event!\nMeet a real NASA Space Shuttle Astronaut — Rex Walheim\, who grew up right here in San Carlos — and give your family the chance to hear his incredible firsthand stories from the final Space Shuttle mission. This is the perfect family outing during the school break\, especially if you have relatives in town and young minds ready to be inspired. Come spark curiosity\, imagination\, and a love of exploration at the Hiller Aviation Museum. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get your tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n This Event is included with museum admission.\nMuseum Members are Free. SUMMARY:The Ones Who Got Away
DESCRIPTION:The Ones Who Got Away\n \n \n \n \n \n Presentation and Book Signing \nDuring World War II\, the intrepid airmen of the Mighty Eighth Air Force of the USAAF took the war into the heart of Hitler’s Third Reich. In those terrible battles in the skies over occupied Europe\, 50\,000 of these airmen were shot down. More than half died and nearly half were captured. BUT\, about 3\,000 escaped death and evaded capture. These are the stories of the ones who got away! \nThere are stories of harrowing escapes from the Gestapo\, and of men betrayed by their helpers\, and of men nearly freezing to death on mountain trails. One man\, picked up by pro-Nazi French police faked an appendicitis because it was easier to escape from a hospital than a jail. His plan went sideways\, and he woke up without an appendix—and convalescing in a German military hospital. But he got away! \n One American was on the verge of being arrested by the Spanish police as a smuggler on a snow swept mountain trail because he had no ID to prove he was an American. Luckily\, he thought to show them his pocket comb with “US Army” stamped on it. This worked\, and he was allowed to face a horrible blizzard alone— but without fear of prison. Some downed airmen wound up fighting the Germans with the underground. One volunteered to take over operating a clandestine radio for the Belgian underground. Another man found himself as the getaway driver for a band of Resistance bank robbers. \nBut they all got way! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n “Reads like a suspense novel.” (The Warbird’s Book Club) \n “Exhilarating…WWII history buffs will devour this.” (Publishers Weekly) \n“Yenne has done a masterful job of weaving the stories together while considering overlapping time frames and diverse locations. His skill in using the escape and evasion reports results in the book reading like a thrilling novel.” (Peter Belmonte) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get your tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n This Event is included with museum admission.\nMuseum Members are Free. The maximum partial eclipse viewing will be at 11:13 a.m. \nEvent included with Museum admission. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n See More 5\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get your tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n This Event is included with museum admission.\nMuseum Members are Free.
