SUMMARY:Aviation Innovation Summit
DESCRIPTION:Aviation Innovation Summit\nSaturday April 25\, 11 AM\n \n \n \n \n \n The Aviation Innovation Summit is a student‑organized event hosted in collaboration with the Hiller Aviation Museum\, taking place on April 25\, 11:00 AM. This year’s summit brings together industry leaders from Ampaire and Reliable Robotics for a dynamic panel discussion focused on two of the most critical challenges facing general aviation today: sustainability and safety. In addition to sharing insights into cutting‑edge technologies\, the panelists will reflect on their own career journeys—highlighting how curiosity\, persistence\, and personal growth have shaped their paths in aviation. \nAmpaire is pioneering hybrid‑electric aircraft technology that reduces fuel consumption\, emissions\, and noise while making regional air travel more accessible and efficient. By retrofitting existing aircraft with electric propulsion systems\, Ampaire is working toward a more sustainable future for aviation without requiring entirely new infrastructure. Reliable Robotics\, meanwhile\, is advancing autonomous flight systems designed to dramatically improve aviation safety by automating all phases of flight—from taxi to landing—while remaining fully compatible with existing airspace and aircraft. Together\, these companies offer a powerful look at how innovation is transforming aviation today. The Aviation Innovation Summit aims to inspire curiosity about the rapidly evolving general aviation industry and encourage the next generation to pursue their interests\, explore new technologies\, and imagine their own futures in aviation. \nSummit included with museum admission. Hiller Aviation Museum Members are free.

Within the X\, a subtle design draws inspiration from the Hiller-copter XH-44\, honoring the innovation and aviation legacy rooted in San Carlos. \nMore than a finisher’s medal\, it represents ten years of footsteps on tarmac and a milestone where ground and sky stories intersect. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Post-Race Fair & Activities:\n\nRefreshments\nSponsor booths\nHiller Aviation Museum Exhibits and Aircraft\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n For more info\, contact: Audie Amirkiai\, VP of Development\, at audie@hiller.org or 650-654-0200 x203. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Aviator Sponsors\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n – \n \n \nMark Jon Bluth\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Navigator Sponsors\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Explorer Sponsors\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Adventurer Sponsors\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Ground Crew Sponsors\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Frequently Asked Questions\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n What time should I arrive on Race Day?\n\nSuggested arrival time is 6:30 to 7 am.\nDoors open at 7 am on Sunday\, April 12. It is known throughout the Bay Area and exhibits at regional parks\, museums\, train hobby shows\, and community events. It is one of the oldest and largest modular large-scale clubs in the world. \n\nLarge layouts are low enough for small children to see and be close to the action.\nSee a variety of scenic themes with great detail and animation.\nTrains represent late 19th-century steam locomotives up to 21st-century diesel-powered engines.\nFreight and passenger trains.\nDiscover the importance of railroads and railroad history.\nLearn from knowledgeable hobbyists in woodworking\, electrical\, and scenic construction techniques.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Display dates: Saturday April 4 – Sunday April 12 \nThe Golden Gate Lionel Railroad Club is a group of train enthusiasts that operate three rail O-scale and classic trains on a 20 ft. by 35 ft. hi rail modular layout with three loops of track. \nThis is the fourth layout they have built since their founding in 1986 by Gerry Bretshneider in San Francisco. It is now one of five Lionel Railroad Clubs in the U.S. The layout is never finished as their many creative members are continually detailing several areas. Look closely!! \nFor more information about the club\, please see their website at www.gglrrc.org. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n AsiaNRail\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Display dates: Wednesday April 8 – Sunday April 12 \nExplore exotic\, colorful Asia by rail. Follow trains through scenes of rural rice terraces and waterfalls\, ancient mountain temples\, and enchanting villages. This layout presents 1/150 Asian N scale models of historic steam and modern diesel and electric trains from Japan\, Taiwan\, China\, Korea\, Thailand\, Russia and other Asian countries. The setting of the layout features traditional Asian architecture and scenery displayed with informative descriptions of each scene to help viewers learn more about the diverse cultures of Asia as they follow the trains around the layout. First displayed in 2008\, the layout has been shown at several local shows\, including the annual Train Days exhibition at the Los Altos History Museum\, and at several regional and national conventions of the National Model Railroad Association. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Display dates: Wednesday April 8 – Sunday April 12 \nPeninsula NTRAK is an N-scale model railway club founded in 1991 on the San Francisco peninsula. The club is known for the high standard of quality and detail that its members achieve. Peninsula NTRAK modules are built to international NTRAK standards\, allowing the modules to be joined by others worldwide. The club has participated in numerous local shows each year\, and many members have taken their modules to conventions up and down the West Coast\, including the national conventions of the National Model Railroad Association in Sacramento in 2011 and in Portland\, Oregon\, in August 2015. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Exploiting the advantages of N scale\, which is just 1/160 the size of real trains\, the layout can run the long trains that represent North American mainline railroading in the U.S.\, Canada and Mexico – with occasional visits by trains from other parts of the world\, including high speed bullet trains\, Caltrain and even Thomas\, The Tank Engine! Find out more about the club at www.ttrainweb.org/pntrak.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Swiss Narrow Gauge\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Display dates: Saturday April 4 – Wednesday April 8 \nSwiss Narrow H0m Gauge \nThe Meter Gauge Module Group runs trains that are HO scale (1:87) but with a smaller gauge of 12mm between the rails instead of the standard 16.5mm gauge. There are many meter gauge lines in Switzerland run by private companies such as Rhaetische Bahn (RhB)\, Furka Oberalp (FO)\, Brig Visp Zermatt (BVZ)\, Montreux Oberland Bernois (MOB)\, and Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB). We run models of the famous Glacier Express and Bernina Express trains\, as well as local passenger trains and freight trains from all these companies. \nIn addition to the pleasant Swiss scenery our modules\, we have two particularly attractive areas\, a model of the Chamby station on the MOB line\, and a stone arch viaduct that goes into a tunnel reminiscent of the Landwasser Viaduct on the RhB network. We run single track mainlines with sidings in stations\, and we also incorporate elevation changes in our track\, with one module that has the track cross over itself as it loops around. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Display dates: Saturday April 4 – Tuesday April 7 \nThe Golden Gate American Flyer Club comprises members who enjoy collecting and operating S Gauge trains\, which were popularized by the A.C. Gilbert Company starting in 1946.   We are also interested in other A.C. Gilbert products including HO trains and Erector sets as well as S Gauge trains by other manufacturers. Lionel produced trains under the American Flyer name\, but has recently limited production.   Other current and former manufacturers include American Models\, S-Helper Service\, MTH\, and Scale Trains. \nWe meet twice monthly\, once by Zoom for the benefit of members who live in outlying areas of California and the West\, and once in person at the home of a Bay Area member.  At the in person meetings\, we enjoy running trains on the host’s layout\, buying\, selling and swapping trains\, sharing repair tips\, and showing off our latest acquisitions. \nWe also have a modular layout which we display at various trains shows and it will be on display at this event. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get your tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n This Event is included with museum admission.\nMuseum Members are Free. DESCRIPTION:Bay Area Garden Railroad\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Bay Area Garden Railroad Society’s waist-high track features live steam locomotives. These railroad engines are designed to be run in anybody’s backyard garden. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Live steam locomotives have a butane-fueled fire that boils water. The resultant steam is then used to power the pistons. This is the same technique full-size locomotives have used for 180 years. Many examples of old-time model steam locomotives will be seen running on the track\, all the while puffing wonderful plumes of steam. \n*Trains are outdoors and weather dependent. They will not run in the rain.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get your tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n This Event is included with museum admission.Museum Members are Free. SUMMARY:Maddux-Airlines
DESCRIPTION:Maddux AirlinesPresented by Ryann WillisSaturday February 21\, 11AM \nWriting a memoir based on family history can be an extraordinary adventure\, one I highly recommend undertaking. My just-completed manuscript is based on my grandfather\, an aviation pioneer\, who died when my father was only four years old. Like many who have written family-based stories\, I initially did not set out to write a full book. \nMy inspiration came from my grandmother. When she passed away at ninety-nine\, I inherited her collection of never-before-seen photographs\, articles\, and an extensive array of newspaper clippings. What began as a casual attempt to learn more about my ancestors for a short Shutterfly project turned into an eight-year journey of discovery. \nWhether our experiences with family are positive or negative\, family often serves as the cornerstone of our lives\, with each family being unique in its own way\, shaped by its history\, traditions\, and shared experiences. Filling in the gaps of the past can be both challenging and rewarding. Every story\, every discovery\, can provide unexpected insights into our own journeys. Delving into the past can also lead to family myths being shattered and uncomfortable truths being revealed. Yet\, the truth can also bring liberation\, freeing us from the burden of the unknown. While working on the book\, I learned that my grandfather was not only an airline founder but also a World War I submariner\, so if you’re thinking about writing about your forebearers\, I say damn the torpedoes and full speed ahead. \nRyann Willis is the granddaughter of airline pioneer Jack Maddux and the first cousin of Senator John McCain. She graduated from UCLA and is a former employee of Apple\, Inc.\, as well as the owner of a successful art dealing and appraisal business. She currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Aero Club of Southern California\, where she also holds the position of Historian. Additionally\, she is an active member of several aviation organizations\, including the NAA\, the Society for Aviation History\, and the National Aviation Hall of Fame.

A graduate of UC Berkeley and the University of Houston\, Walheim began his career as an Air Force flight test engineer before being selected as a NASA astronaut in 1996. Over the next two decades\, he became one of the program’s most experienced mission specialists and spacewalkers. \nWalheim flew on three Space Shuttle missions\, including STS-135 in 2011 — the final flight of the Space Shuttle Program. He spent 36 days in space and completed five spacewalks totaling more than 36 hours\, helping build and outfit the International Space Station. At NASA\, he also served as CAPCOM\, led the Spacewalking Branch\, helped develop early ISS operations procedures\, and later guided safety and mission assurance for human spaceflight programs. \nAfter retiring from NASA\, Walheim continued shaping the future of space exploration\, serving in senior leadership roles at Axiom Space and later Blue Origin\, where he now works on astronaut crew integration. His career reflects a lifetime devoted to science\, aviation\, and inspiring the next generation. \n \n \n \n \n \n Don’t miss this must-attend event!\nMeet a real NASA Space Shuttle Astronaut — Rex Walheim\, who grew up right here in San Carlos — and give your family the chance to hear his incredible firsthand stories from the final Space Shuttle mission. SUMMARY:Turkey Toss!
DESCRIPTION:Helicopter Turkey Toss & Turkey Hunt\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n In Commemoration of arguably the greatest sitcom episode ever aired on TV\, the 1978 WKRP in Cincinnati “Turkeys Away” the Hiller Aviation Museum presents the Turkey Toss! \nThe Museum is known for presenting many events using a helicopter. Santa and the Easter Bunny both arrive by helicopter\, A Witch drops pumpkins on Halloween\, and even a skydiving leprechaun jumps out of a helicopter for St. Patrick’s Day. Now once again the museum will be dropping Turkeys! No\, not real turkeys because domestic Turkeys can’t fly\, as illustrated in the famous WKRP episode\, so we will be dropping little soft\, squeezable Turkeys that the kids can take home with them. \nTo quote Arthur Carlson\, the GM of WKRP\, “As God is my witness\, I thought Turkeys could fly!” \nThere will also be a Turkey Hunt all day. Find all the Turkey’s hiding in the Museum and win a prize! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n See More 5\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Here is the script from that famous episode: Nov 1978 \nLes Nessman: I'm here with hundreds of people who have gathered to witness what has been described as perhaps the greatest turkey event in Thanksgiving Day history. All we know for sure is that in a very few moments there are going to be a lot of happy people out here. Now the crowd is... \n[passers-by gawk at Les] \nLes Nessman: The... the crowd is uh... curious but well behaved. And I think I hear something now. Uh... The crowd is moving out into the parking area. And... oh yes! I can see it now. It's a... it's a... helicopter and it's coming this way! \nAndy Travis: A helicopter? \nLes Nessman: It's flying something behind it and I can't quite make it out. It's a large banner and it says H a p p y... T h a n k s... giving... from W... K... R... P! What a sight\, ladies and gentlemen. What a sight. The 'copter seems to circling the parking area now. I guess it's looking for a place to land. No! Something just came out of the back of a helicopter. It's a dark object\, perhaps a skydiver plummeting to the earth from only two thousand feet in the air... There's a third... No parachutes yet... Those can't be skydivers. I can't tell just yet what they are but... Oh my God! They're turkeys! Oh no! Johnny can you get this? Oh\, they're crashing to the earth right in front of our eyes! One just went through the windshield of a parked car! This is terrible! Everyone's running around pushing each other. Oh my goodness! Oh\, the humanity! People are running about. The turkeys are hitting the ground like sacks of wet cement! Folks\, I don't know how much longer... The crowd is running for their lives. I think I'm going to step inside. I can't stand here and watch this anymore. No\, I can't go in there. Children are searching for their mothers and oh\, not since the Hindenburg tragedy has there been anything like this. I don't know how much longer I can hold my position here\, Johnny. The crowd... \nDr. Johnny Fever: Les? Les? Les\, are you there? Les isn't there. Thanks for that on-the-spot report\, Les. For those of you who've just tuned in\, the Pinedale Shopping Mall has just been bombed with live turkeys. Film at eleven. \n[Les walks in\, looking dazed] \nVenus Flytrap: Les! Are you okay? \nLes Nessman: I don't know. A man and his two children tried to kill me. After the turkeys hit the pavement\, the crowd kind of scattered but\, some of them tried to attack me! I tried to jam myself into a phone booth. Then Mr. Carlson had the helicopter land in the middle of the parking lot. I guess he thought he could save the day by turning the rest of the turkeys loose. It gets pretty strange after that. \nVenus Flytrap: [to Andy] "Now" it gets strange. \nAndy Travis: Yeah\, right. Now\, Les\, c'mon now\, tell us the rest. \nLes Nessman: [dazed] I really don't know how to describe it. It was like the turkeys mounted a counter-attack. It was almost as if they were... organized! \nArthur Carlson: [Mr. Carlson and Herb come out of his Mr. Carlson's office] As God is my witness\, I thought turkeys could fly! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Sponsored by\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get your tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n This Event is included with museum admission.Museum Members are Free. DESCRIPTION:Paper Airplanes\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Everyone loves paper airplanes. We turn into test pilots just by folding sheets of paper. We make them to see how fast they will go or how far they will fly\, we even try to do aerobatics with them. \n \n \n \n \n \n \nOne of the top paper airplane makers in the country (and world record holder)\, John Collins\, will join us for an expert demonstration of the wonder\, delight and aeronautic capabilities of hand made paper gliders. John is world distance paper airplane record holder and a master paper airplane builder. John has written a number of books on building paper airplanes that will be available at the event and John will make sure he personalizes it just for you. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nJohn’s discussions and demonstrations will last approximately 45 minutes.
