Veterans Share Untold Stories of the YO-3A Quiet Star Aircraft

The Hiller Aviation Museum invites aviation enthusiasts, history buffs, and the public to a special two-day event honoring the Lockheed YO-3A Quiet Star, a revolutionary silent observation aircraft deployed during the Vietnam War. On October 4 and 5, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, veterans who flew and maintained this unique plane will be on-site to recount their experiences, showcase rare photographs, and deliver engaging presentations.

The YO-3A, nicknamed the “Quiet Star,” was designed by Lockheed for nighttime battlefield surveillance, allowing U.S. forces to detect enemy movements undetected thanks to its near-silent engine and propeller system. Deployed in Vietnam starting in 1970, the aircraft played a crucial role in directing artillery and observing enemy activity under the cover of darkness. The Hiller Aviation Museum proudly displays one of these historic aircraft, offering visitors a rare glimpse into this chapter of aviation and military history.

Throughout both days, pilots, technical observers, and crew chiefs will be available to interact with guests, sharing firsthand accounts of missions over Vietnam’s treetops. Rare photos from the era will be on display, providing visual insights into the YO-3A’s operations. Prepared presentations will be held in the morning (10:30 AM) and afternoon (2:00 PM), covering the aircraft’s development, its role in the war, and personal stories from those who served.

Of special note, Fred Garrett, a U.S. Army Specialist 5 (Sp5) who served as Crew Chief on YO-3A serial number 69-18001 in Vietnam, will be among the participants. His expertise and experiences highlight the dedication of ground crews who kept these stealthy aircraft mission-ready in challenging conditions.
