Designed and built in 1992 at Pinole, California by kitplane enthusiast Mike Arnold, the AR-5 was constructed of composite materials similar to those used by Mojave-based aviation innovator Burt Rutan.  Its extreme light weight (under 500 lbs. empty) and exceptional aerodynamics made it capable of speeds over 200 miles per hour with only a 65 hp Rotax 582 engine.

Arnold leveraged his experience with the AR-5 to later construct the larger AR-6, a racer built around a 100 hp Continental O-200 engine more famously used as the powerplant for the more pedestrian Cessna 150 trainer.  The AR-6 placed first in the Formula One category at the 2007 Reno Air Races.
