Cessna 177 Cardinal
Â

Designed by Cessna as a more modern replacement for its popular four-seat Cessna 172 Skyhawk, the 177 introduced several design innovations. A rearward-set wing enhanced pilot visibility, as did the removal of external struts. The shift in wing location required an increase in pitch authority, which Cessna addressed by replacing the 172’s traditional elevator control with a full-span stabilator more akin to that found in the Piper Cherokee.Â
While the Cardinal was originally intended to be certified as the 172J and fully replace the original 172 once in service, Cessna ultimately opted to maintain production of both aircraft with the new airframe receiving the designation Cessna 177 Introduced in 1968, over 4,000 Cardinals were built over the ensuing decade. Ironically, the Cessna 172 that the 177 was originally intended to replace remains in production today.
