Field Trip Instructor – Part Time
Join us to work with kids and aircraft at the Hiller Aviation Museum!
Field Trip instructors teach hands-on science- and flight-themed lessons to students Grades K-12 while working behind-the-scenes at a unique Museum located at one of California’s busiest small airports. Activities include building and flying various model aircraft, completing realistic flight simulations, working inside the cockpits of historic aircraft, building and programming small robots, using computer aided design and 3D printers and more.
Field trip and Boy/Girl Scout programs take place at the Museum’s San Carlos facility, while after-school programs are conducted at elementary schools in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties.
Instructor positions pay $17 – $20/hr, depending on experience.
Instructors must have experience working with elementary or middle-school children and good classroom management skills. Familiarity with science and/or aviation is a plus but not essential—teachers comfortable with elementary-aged students can readily learn the aerospace-specific content with the provided curriculum and training.
Field trips take place weekday mornings, with typical shift times 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM. After-school programs take place at school campuses, with typical shift times 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM. Shifts vary based on reservations and instructor availability, but instructors typically work 2-5 field trips and 1-3 after-school programs per week, for a total of 30-50 hours per month. Availability for weekend programs is preferred but not required, with 15-30 hr/month available through weekend shifts.
Field trip instructors are eligible to teach full time shifts when Aviation Camp is in session, typically during school holiday periods. Availability to teach Aviation Camp is not required to be considered for the field trip teaching position.
